The Uptown Association is a nonprofit organization that promotes Uptown as a safe, prosperous, accessible, well maintained and environmentally responsible commercial and residential area. It also exists to improve the economic stability and vitality of Uptown and to celebrate its unique spirit and sense of community.

The Uptown Association was formed in 1975 as the Hennepin Lake Improvement Association by approximately ten Uptown business and property owners. Since then, it has grown to over 175 members. Today it is a nonprofit trade association, which promotes Uptown as a safe, prosperous, accessible, attractive, well-maintained and environmentally responsible commercial and residential area. It also exists to improve the economic stability and vitality of Uptown and to celebrate and sustain its unique spirit and sense of community. The Association welcomes diversity of all kinds and advocates the greater benefit of the entire Uptown community. Any commercial interest within the geographic boundaries can become a member of the Uptown Association.

The Association advocates for the greater benefit of the entire Uptown community. The organization is member based with a volunteer Board of Directors of 24. The organization serves members and non-members alike for the greater benefit of the entire Uptown community.

The Association serves in a variety of capacities to over 500 businesses and 4 neighborhood associations in the footprint of Uptown’s geographical boundaries. The Association has four working and active committees that include its Board of Directors, members, non-members and resident representation. The Association is also the producer of the Uptown Art Fair now in its 46th year.

The Uptown Association’s mission is to create and sustain a healthy business and community environment by providing open communication between stakeholders, promoting economic development without sacrificing our unique culture and serving as a catalyst toward the improvement of the Uptown community.

WE DO THIS BY
Promoting discussions among property owners, businesses, tenants and residents in the Uptown Commercial Area for upgrading and development of the area.

Providing a stimulus for the improvement of the area by promoting comprehensive planning for the continued implementation of a unified and integrated Planning, Development and Promotion of the Uptown Area.

Creating activities and promotions that are used for the exclusive benefit of the Uptown Area.

Uptown Association Board Members are nominated by a selection committee and voted upon (for two-year terms) at the Uptown Association Annual Meeting. Serving on the Board of Directors is a great leadership opportunity to work with existing and prospective members and the Uptown community. Interested candidates must be members of the Association or willing to become current members. Prospective candidates need to be property owners, business owners or employees or residents within the geographical area described as Uptown. Although not currently required, participation on an Uptown Association Committee prior to joining the Board is desired and highly recommended.

Please contact Maude Lovelle at 612-823-4581 with questions regarding commitment and responsibilities or to express your interest in being considered for the 2011 Uptown Association Board.

The Uptown Association Board of Directors meets on the 3rd Tuesday of each month at 7:30 a.m. at the Old Chicago Restaurant, 2841 Hennepin Avenue S. Meetings are open to the public. If you would like to be included on the agenda, please contact the Uptown Association office at 612-823-4581 one week prior to the meeting.
