The Uptown Association is a nonprofit organization that promotes Uptown as a safe, prosperous, accessible, well maintained and environmentally responsible commercial and residential area. It also exists to improve the economic stability and vitality of Uptown and to celebrate its unique spirit and sense of community.

The Uptown Association was formed in 1975 as the Hennepin Lake Improvement Association by approximately ten Uptown business and property owners. Since then, it has grown to over 175 members. Today it is a nonprofit trade association, which promotes Uptown as a safe, prosperous, accessible, attractive, well-maintained and environmentally responsible commercial and residential area. It also exists to improve the economic stability and vitality of Uptown and to celebrate and sustain its unique spirit and sense of community. The Association welcomes diversity of all kinds and advocates the greater benefit of the entire Uptown community. Any commercial interest within the geographic boundaries can become a member of the Uptown Association.

The Association advocates for the greater benefit of the entire Uptown community. The organization is member based with a volunteer Board of Directors of 24. The organization serves members and non-members alike for the greater benefit of the entire Uptown community.

The Association serves in a variety of capacities to over 500 businesses and 4 neighborhood associations in the footprint of Uptown’s geographical boundaries. The Association has four working and active committees that include its Board of Directors, members, non-members and resident representation. The Association is also the producer of the Uptown Art Fair, rapidly approaching its 50th year!

The Uptown Association’s mission is to improve the economic vitality and sustainability of Uptown through collaboration and partnerships.

WE DO THIS BY
Promoting discussions among property owners, businesses, tenants and residents in the Uptown Commercial Area for upgrading and development of the area.

Providing a stimulus for the improvement of the area by promoting comprehensive planning for the continued implementation of a unified and integrated Planning, Development and Promotion of the Uptown Area.

Creating activities and promotions that are used for the exclusive benefit of the Uptown Area.

The Uptown Association Board of Directors is a volunteer group representing businesses, residents, and Uptown stakeholders. Our nominating committee selects a slate of candidates to be voted upon by association members. Each board member serves a 2 year term, with the option to re-apply upon its fulfillment. Although not required, it is recommended that those interested in applying for the Board of Directors serve on an Uptown Association committee prior to doing so.

Events and Programming Internships
The Uptown Association Internship Program provides an excellent opportunity for students to receive hands-on experience at one of the most active business associations in the City of Minneapolis, as well as the producer of the nationally acclaimed Uptown Art Fair.   The Association is looking for several interns starting FEBRUARY 2012 who are interested in enhancing their education experience in the areas of event planning and project management, communications, public relations, marketing, and journalism.  The internship hours are PART-TIME during the school year (if applicable) and FULL-TIME during the summer months (through August 31, 2012).

Possible responsibilities include planning events and programs, working with stakeholders in the community, creating and writing marketing pieces, database management, research, VIP relations, and staff support.  Association Interns play integral roles in coordinating the Uptown Art Fair- one of the top 10 fine art festival in the US and second most attended event in MN.  They will not only see a large event from the planning stages to completion, but gain experience in project management and maintaining budgets.    Association Intern positions are unpaid, however, interns enhance their skills and take home tangible work products for their portfolios.

Ideal candidates are creative self-starters needing little supervision.  Must be detail-oriented, have excellent communication skills and the ability to multi-task.  Team players, who are adaptable and independent problem solvers will succeed in this position.  Strong writing skills are a must.  Familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite and Microsoft Office Suite a plus. MUST BE AVAILABLE through AUGUST 31, 2012- NO EXCEPTIONS. Applicants must submit a resume, cover letter and a list of three references. The cover letter should include work and education experience, availability and desired outcomes. Applications will be accepted until positions are filled, however.

Graphic Designer (Part-Time)
The Uptown Association is a nonprofit organization that promotes Uptown as a safe, prosperous, accessible, well maintained and environmentally responsible commercial and residential area. While celebrating its unique spirit and sense of community, the Association is also the producer of the nationally acclaimed Uptown Art Fair. The Art Fair, in its 49th year, is one of the top ten fine art festivals in the US and second most attended event in Minnesota.

The Graphic Designer will be responsible for creating the graphic look and brand of the annual Art Fair, and applying that to a multitude of printed and digital matter. This includes: an event program, outdoor banners and signage, print advertisements, apparel designs, web ads, etc. The Uptown Association also hosts events throughout the year, such as an annual meeting, networking events, and seasonal celebrations. These events design requirements include invitations, flyers, brochures, decals, and other miscellaneous materials, as needed.

The Graphic Designer will also be responsible for assisting with the facilitation of events and programs, attending committee meetings, working with stakeholders in the community, and research.

This is a great opportunity for a designer to gain a range of experience, and to see their designs on everything from bush shelter ads and to local publications. Ideal candidates are creative self-starters needing little supervision.  Must be detail-oriented, have excellent communication skills and the ability to multi-task. Team players, who are adaptable and independent problem solvers will succeed in this position. Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, Indesign, Dreamweaver, and Microsoft Office Suite proficiency are a must.  Experience working within brand guidelines and strong writing skills are a plus.

It is expected that board, committee, and staff members will be critiquing and reviewing your design work on a regular basis. Being able to take criticism, make changes, and produce a quick turnaround to meet deadlines is a necessity. This position averages 20-25 hours per week with flexible hours. MUST BE AVAILABLE on AUGUST 3-5, 2012 for the Uptown Art Fair- NO EXCEPTIONS. Position will start as soon as possible.
