About the exhibit
Land: George Shiras III (1859–1942) pioneered early wildlife photography in the United States along Lake Superior’s southern shore.
Art: He is best known for serene nighttime pictures from the 1890s using spot- or jacklight hunting techniques deep in the forests of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.
Ecology: Shiras wrote the Federal Migratory Bird Law in 1904 — a first attempt to codify protection for nonhuman species under law.
Rights: Shiras advocated putting down the gun for the camera and studying wildlife. His legacy is a reminder that conservation in the United States remains deeply tied to nineteenth-century land use and hunting in the Upper Midwest and elsewhere.
Cruise is an Arts & Culture Vibrant Storefront grant recipient, funded by the City of Minneapolis Arts & Cultural Affairs Department.
