The upcoming SoMi Art Fair at Bachman’s Garden Center will feature a unique and immersive art activity that combines creativity with sustainability. Visitors are invited to create their own small paintings using liquid watercolors crafted from food waste provided by Chowgirls Catering and flower waste from pruning and trimmings at Bachman’s—turning waste into art as part of a circular economy initiative.
Centered on values of environmental consciousness and artistic exploration, this hands-on activity offers an opportunity for participants to connect with innovative, sustainable practices in the arts. Unlike traditional materials, the watercolors are free of synthetic components and microplastics, and are fully compostable, making them gentle on the planet as well as beautiful to use.
“This is not simply an art activity, but an experience that encourages us to rethink how we create,” says Lara Cornell, a sustainability expert with an MA in Sustainable Design from MCAD, specializing in regenerative practices for the arts and art businesses. “It’s an invitation to explore sustainability and artistry through a system where materials come full circle.”
The activity is designed to be inclusive and inspiring, appealing to art lovers across all skill levels who are curious about sustainability and the potential of a regenerative approach in creative practices. Participants will have the chance to learn, experiment, and engage in meaningful conversations with the host, who will be available to answer questions and share insights about sustainable art practices and how they intersect with values of craftsmanship, community, and stewardship.
This thoughtful and interactive experience aims to bridge the gap between sustainability and art, offering a glimpse into what it means to live and create with intention.
The community art activity will take place during the SoMi Art Fair, held at Bachman’s Garden Center, August 2-3. Registration is not required, and all materials are provided.
