Mini Mia at Minneapolis Institute of Art

A playful, art-filled morning for Minneapolis families!

Looking for a creative, low-pressure way to introduce your little one to art? Mini Mia is one of Uptown’s most charming (and underrated) family programs – designed specifically for infants, toddlers, and preschoolers.

Hosted at the Minneapolis Institute of Art, this free monthly event invites caregivers and children ages 0–5 to explore art together through movement, play, and hands-on activities.

Supported and promoted by the Uptown Association, Mini Mia is another example of how events help activate the district and support local businesses.

What Is Mini Mia?

Mini Mia is a rotating, drop-in-style experience where families can move at their own pace through a series of engaging stations. Expect a mix of:

• Simple, kid-friendly art making
• A guided gallery experience designed for young children
• Experience different styles of music
• Movement sessions that help little ones burn energy

The goal? Make museums feel welcoming (and fun) for even the tiniest visitors.

What to Expect

Mini Mia isn’t your typical museum visit. It’s built around comfort, curiosity, and connection:

• Move freely between activities—no strict schedule
• Engage with art in a sensory, age-appropriate way
• Meet other local families in a relaxed environment

Wear comfortable clothes, and consider bringing a front-facing carrier for younger children.

Why It Matters for Uptown

Just a short trip from the heart of Uptown, the Minneapolis Institute of Art acts as a cultural anchor for the city. Programs like Mini Mia make that space more accessible to young families, helping build lifelong connections to the arts from an early age.

Mini Mia helps:

• Strengthen Uptown’s reputation as a family-friendly, arts-forward neighborhood
• Encourage families to be out and about in Uptown
• Create a more connected community
• Activate public and cultural spaces

In a neighborhood known for its energy, it’s worth noting how close you are to experiences like this – quietly enriching, community-driven, and built for the next generation.

Make a Day of It

Mini Mia is the perfect opportunity to:

• Grab coffee or lunch from a local café
• Visit shops and businesses nearby
• Discover new spots in the neighborhood
• Spend time building cultural connections

It’s a simple way to support Uptown while enjoying great, developmental entertainment.
